FSMA SANITARY RULE REQUIREMENT:
> Required to Have Written Food Safety Procedures in Place.
RESPONSE FROM LINDSAY:
> For this requirement, having proper food safety policies and procedures in place will assist in controlling the chances of introducing any food safety hazards to food, either through the work environment or operational practices. These practices and procedures are called Good Transportation Practices when handling food. Within our solution, we provide the instructions, documents and activity tracking for each of these areas; they can be broken down into the following areas:
- Sanitation & Pest control
- Transportation
- Equipment
- Recall & Traceability
- Personnel

Food Safety Q & A for Carriers:
Commonly Asked Questions
Your Questions:
1) When will enforcement of the sanitary transportation rule begin for carriers?
2) What types of enforcement will be used for any companies not in compliance?
3) Are other carriers taking these rules serious?
Our Responses:
1) Enforcement for the Sanitary Transportation of Human and Animal Food Rule will begin on April 6, 2017; less than 40 days away!
2) From what we understand, enforcement could fall into these categories:
- Inspections on the spot at either border crossings or weigh scales.
- DOT or the FDA may ask your drivers to produced records associated with previous loads, sanitation records, wash out receipts and temperature control.
- FDA may schedule an audit or an compliance inspection at your head office or terminal where you will be expected to show that your company has a Food Safety Program in place including written procedures and records.
- Enforcement activities may come through your shipper. During a shipper’s regulatory audit or inspection with the FDA the shipper will be relying on their carriers to be able to produce compliant records to the FDA to exhibit that the food remained safe during transportation.
3) Yes! We have helped many carriers across the United States and Canada who are responsible for transporting food into or within the US. From small operations of 2 – 3 units to companies with 1,000’s of units. Some have started their progress with our food safety training packages and have committed to moving forward with the compliance program once training has been completed.
