CFIA Announces Changes to SFC Licence Process – What Food Importers & Exporters Need to Know
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has announced important changes to the Safe Food for Canadians (SFC) licensing process. While the new Food Safety Supplemental Information (FSSI) questionnaire does not apply to import-only licence holders, all SFC licence applications, renewals, and amendments will now undergo additional review before a licence is issued. As a result, processing times have increased significantly, with CFIA advising businesses to allow up to 70 business days for new applications, renewals, and amendments.
For importers and exporters, the biggest takeaway is to plan ahead. Businesses can renew their SFC licence up to 120 days before it expires, and waiting until the last minute could result in delays that interrupt your ability to import food into Canada. CFIA has also indicated that they may request additional information, review your compliance history, or verify that your preventive controls are in place before approving a licence.
This is also a reminder that your Preventive Control Plan (PCP) should be current, implemented, and supported by appropriate records. During the licensing process, CFIA may look for evidence that your preventive controls, supplier approval program, traceability system, recall procedures, and other food safety requirements meet the Safe Food for Canadians Regulations (SFCR).
